A healthy lifestyle fosters human excellence. It is an integration of the mind, body, and spirit that enables us to continually uncover our potential and strive to achieve all of which we are capable. Healthfulness is a state of accepting responsibility for our own well being. It recognizes health as a method of living that leads to self-fulfillment.
Leading a healthy lifestyle means being physically active, knowing how to manage stress, and eating a balanced diet that meets your nutritional demands. Physical activity is a cornerstone to being well. Moderate daily activity has been shown to decrease the risks associated with many causes of mortality, especially coronary heart disease. A sedentary lifestyle has been declared a primary risk factor for coronary heart disease, along with cigarette smoke, high blood pressure, and high blood cholesterol levels.
While a regular exercise regime may appear to be the most obvious way of becoming more active, there are simple changes you can make in the way you go about an ordinary day that can greatly increase your activity. Use the stairs instead of the elevator. Walk to the TV and change the channel manually. Park farther away from the office or store and walk the extra distance. Walk or bike for small errands instead of using the car. Start a garden.
If you are going to begin an exercise program, be sure to start off slowly and gradually increase the time you spend exercising. The same goes for the intensity with which you participate in that activity. Don’t forget that walking is an excellent form of exercise. It is simple, safe, and effective. The only equipment walking requires is a good pair of shoes. If you have questions about the proper exercise program for your needs, seek the advice of a professional. Always speak with your physician before beginning an exercise program.
